I am so frustrated with the news on Life of Pi... I haven't looked at the IMBD page for a while, and I just did and found out that Jean-Pierre Jeunet gave up the job due to budget issues. Now Ang Lee is directing it... Not so pleased. I haven't seen much of his stuff, but it's just that Jeunet's directing vision is flawless. Those who have seen Amélie know what I mean. A coworker also just recently gave me a couple of his other movies (Delicatessen et La Cité des Enfants Perdus) which I can't wait to watch to see more of his work! It is still a sad loss that Jean-Pierre isn't directing it anymore :(

Some more brownie love! This is my third roll, black and white iso 400. Not too pleased with the contrast, nor the exposures. I think I am going to stick to the iso 100 colour. I am working on a 400 colour roll now, with the aperture attachment. Should be done that soon!

So a couple days ago I got my second tattoo... But you could say it's my third since my first tattoo was two separate tattoos. One could also say that now, I have 25 tattoos, but you'll see what I mean once you see the tattoo.

I choose ITC American Typeface because it then made my skin essentially paper, almost branded by typewriter letter heads. After putting together the composite of them all sort of mosaic, it really makes it that much cooler. I love it.

p.s. the reason "i" and "u" and the "d" is duplicated once is because those letters are in harder to reach places being on my back and behind my ear.

Just some instant feeding through my music choice last night. The Guns of Brixton cover by Nouvelle Vague.

I also haven't posted any sketchbook updates in a while. Been drawing a fair bit at work when it's quiet.

I am also dropping off my latest roll of brownie hawkeye film today so I'm excited to see those.

I have come up with an attachment to modify my brownie hawkeye. Since the black and white film I get which I sometimes like is 400 speed. I made an aperture attachment to make the aperture smaller. So now with the next film I'm going to take double the pictures one with and one without. I will show the two differences (if it works) fingers crossed! For now enjoy the sketches!

So since I now hate Henry's to a different degree, (since they never called me when my prints had arrived) these pictures have arrived well over a month late. HATE! lol

Regardless, I love the pictures. I was a little hesitant on using colour because I've seen some other brownie hawkeye colour film and it looked well too finished and new. Well I was pleasantly surprised when I got these.

See for yourself, all I can say is that so far it epitomizes summer for me.

I'd love to say I've been doing a lot of work this summer, but that's not the case. Instead I went to NYC for my birthday haha. Really enjoyed myself, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. I didn't really take my camera out when I was just wandering the city, but one day I did take it out, I made it work.

So I hated the new CS4 icons... the only thing I liked about them was the transparency of the type, but I hate the dark font. Here is my redesign of them. I'm a minimalist at heart for sure, so here they are!

So it's been a busy the past couple weeks or so. My computer officially crapped out on me the other day and had to be sent in to the apple store. Luckily it was covered by Nvidia because they had some defective packaging on their video cards. Oh well! Toulouse is all good and well now so I can get back to blogging!

So to begin I'll have to put up some of the drawings I have been doing lately. Been out of the mindset of an advertiser and more so into drawing lately. I should get some out, at the very least a few ads out and produced. But for now I am just going to show how amazing one of my roommates is.

Sasha works at a vintage store in Kensington and her boss got this really awesome flag for whatever reason and Sasha, once when she realized what it was called me up and told me I HAD to come by the store immediately. So I headed over. To my absolute euphoric delight Sasha spreads out a giant white on black flag of none other than DURAN DURAN! haha With many many pins attached from other 80s gods, such as: Tears for Fears, Simon le Bon, and some others who I don't know. So here it is up in my room!

So a week ago my dad gave me some old things from my oma's which included a super 8 camcorder a Canonet rangefinder and the one I seem to be using mostly is the old brownie hawkeye.

I've developed a roll already and have purchased some more film to take pictures with. So far after the first trial run, I feel more comfortable using it. What I like the most about it is that the camera is super easy, and gives quite nice results as long as you keep it still in lower light conditions. So I got a 160 speed colour film and the same 400 speed b/w for the next round. I will have to post them as well in the future. But for now this is what I have to offer.

Stream of Consciousness

Stream of consciousness, or automatic writing, is what most surrealist artists used this method to gain access to their subconscious mind and let flow a truth. I did some of it right when I first got my typewriter, then had it laying around the house where a roommate noticed and commented on it. So I began last night to do some more. I have been doing something I would say similar to it with my typewriter and thought I would share. I may go through it more intently sometime this week and see what I can get out of it.

I've been drawing more than I usually do and here's what I've been coming up with. I've mostly found a new kind of image I like, and that is super geometric figures, such as squares and variations of squares.

I feel bad for the adobe creative suite on my computer. It's been getting NO attention since school ended. Just a couple photoshop uses here and there. Is it at all possible for computer programs to have feelings?

Another thing to add, is the new acquisition of a late 60's typewriter. It is a Hermes 3000 that is estimated to be worth $800. Thanks to Value Village I was able to get it for a measly $30. It works great and I am in love with it. I must name her!!

This is a quick update of something I'm learning in my HoMA class right now. With two hours before my exam. But Karel Appel is an artist of the movement COBRA which was an abbreviation for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. They looked to a reductionist method of stripping out all that is needed to represent something and seen clearly in Appel's work there is a lot missing, but you get the idea.

I just love the forms of the children with such simple, straightforward iconographic sort of speech through the art.

To begin today's post. I have to commend a favourite artist of mine. Musical artist that is, but also their choice in video for their new single is what I'm talking about.

Röyksopp's most recent single titled "Happy Up Here" is amazing sounding. Reverting slightly to their debut album "Melody A.M." but with more upbeat and light beats. Really brings me back to when I started listening to them. I thought I would share the new video and promote them as much as I can. Also the director, Reuben Sutherland is a genius with the space invaders theme and even just the intro to the entire video, with the fast paced cuts, just amazingly done. I cannot speak any less about this video. So now just enjoy it!

Also to note, I have been a busy bee lately working on some stuff for class. These two pieces were for my ad concept class about HIV/AIDS education and safety in schools. I chose out of the three (abstinence, safer sex and global awareness) abstinence and safer sex as seen in the two posters below. I'm going to try and get some more personal work up on here, it's more free minded that way but for now school rules.

Today while passing some time before a project pitch to a client I began looking more into the Spring 2009 Milan fashion pieces and came across Karl Lagerfeld's designs for Fendi. I really fell in love with them and felt like sharing. The main parts of the collection is what I liked the most. Laser cut fabrics with structural bell shaped bottoms, and amazing hints of sheer fabrics. Not to mention the amazing belts. Love the belts, they really keep everything in tact. It really marries a futuristic look to the almost medieval tapestry aesthetic. I love this collection and KL is one of my favourites for sure.

So today I was wondering while my professor was setting up her podcasting program, "when will we run out of space, even for electronic data."

It is a scary thought to think of, that one day even space for data will run out. Podcasts spanning two hours, videocasts, youtube, my blog even! We can make more data storage that holds a lot of info, considering we have terabytes now, but think about it. Space will always be taken up by digital space no matter how small we can physically make processors.

In this thought I felt like illustrating it through condensed type on a page. Representing a microchip.

Obsession

I find lately that I have a very active obsession with a building in New York City. It goes by the name Seagram Building and in my wake of obsession I have created a wallpaper. Yes, the cliché wallpaper all amateur designers do. I do not care what people think about me for this, I want to show my love and affection for a building that embodies something I really love. Which is the infamous grid system and modernist aesthetics. Regardless, this building is a true gem and should be viewed whenever someone is in NYC.

Now with that out of the way I would like to complete the introduction.

My name is Dillon Scheenaard, and I herald from the great white north of Canada. I live in Toronto, Ontario and am attending Ontario College of Art & Design for advertising design.

As time passes I will upload work that I have done from this date on. My passions stem from the modernist graphic designers such as Josef Müller-Brockman, Armin Hoffman, A. M. Cassandre and my personal favourite, Wolfgang Weingart. I enjoy the clean and well structured compositions of them all, with the excuse of Weingart who of course had a structured chaos in many of his works.

Now to show a piece.

This page is an illustration of a song by Status Quo, evidently titled "Again & Again". In titles I can be anal retentive and the word "and" will never show up, they are always replaced with an ampersand. This page helps to demonstrate my minor OCD with this subject.
